The Dirty Truth About Mobile Phone Recycling

Ahh the mobile phone. An item that has become more of a necessity than a luxury item for many. But still adorned as so. And people will spend a lot of money to have the latest and greatest mobile phone with the most sophisticated features. But at what cost?

The mobile phone market continues to grow as we populate the world at an also steadily increasing rate, mobile phones become more and more mainstream. It’s said that around 80% of the worlds population owns a mobile phone. That means more and more old mobiles going discarded and ending up in landfill sites where they are destroying the environment at an alarming rate while everyone is oblivious while playing with their latest mobile.

It’s reported that of the 90 million mobiles in circulation in the UK, only around 10% of them are actually being recycled. 10%! That’s quite shocking when you think of how long mobile phone recycling has been happening now. When you consider the damage they can cause to the planet. True, figures do show a rise in mobile phone recycling. In people actually recycling old mobile phones now. “I really wouldn’t advise using some mobile phone recycling companies. I recently decided to leave my job working for one of these companies for moral reasons. Many of the quotes given are never paid out. Customers are often told that their phones are broken when they are in full working order and are worth more than is ever paid out. Some of these companies even rip charities off, saying that the funds go to a charity, when usually the charity gets the pence and the recycling company gets the £100′s of pounds. Many of these companies employees are also given the chance to earn high commission, so the more the general public/ charities are ripped off, the more likely the employee is to hit their target and get a massive bonus. I would recommend not using some of these companies, even though they work well in environmental terms, they would rather pocket your cash for themselves.”

Whether or not this is a true account by an ex employee of one of these sites I don’t know. I can see it happening though. And like I said, while this may be going on unseen on the other side of things. They do work well in environmental terms and the long run will be a better, greener future for all of us. Despite these things going on it’s bad advice to suggest never to use a mobile phone recycler. If no one did we’d have even bigger problems!

We have tried to raise awareness to people in creating this site on mobile phone recycling and be a place for people to come to, to get questions answered they may have when it comes to recycling mobile phones. It was hoped that calling it sell your mobile that people would find it first before actually just using the first mobile phone recycling site that came up in the search results to sell and recycle their old mobile phone.

This was something I done when I first wanted to sell my old mobile phone online and searched online for something similar and used one of the first mobile phone recycling sites that came up in the search list because I already knew of the one I used. I sold and recycled my mobile phone with them and got paid eventually in the same week but it was then that I found out that I could have got a lot more money for my mobile if I had sold it to another site instead. I also found out that another site was offering even more money for it if I took Gift Vouchers as payment instead at an additional 20%. Which would have been perfect for me because I was selling the phone to raise funds for something from Argos anyway.

So it was that, that inspired me to create Sell Your Mobile here. To write reviews of the mobile phone recycling sites. To compare them against each other and highlight where they are different. So people would know which one is best for them and to help you get the most money for your mobile phone. To also blog about any other mobile phone recycling site information that has been going on since mobile phone recycling started and to create awareness of it. I just read an interesting story on Envirofone. It goes on to say how they have made £3.3 million pound in profit for the last 12 months. £3.3 million! Chief executive Nick Brown said: “Like all great ideas this has taken some time to get going. It all boils down to a massive marketing and efficiency push.” This is what I have said right from the start. Envirofone are probably one of the most well known mobile phone recycling sites next to MazumaMobile. But that’s only because they spend so much money on advertising and online promotion.

But also like I have said before. Just because Envirofone are the most well known and most used mobile phone recycling site. It doesn’t make them the highest paying. Two Giant Mobile Phone Recyclers. Both have their own features & benefits. Both have different ways they can pay you for your mobile phone. Both are the same thing. But just how same are they?

Envirofone vs Mazuma Mobile

Envirofone & Mazuma Mobile are home branded name mobile phone recyclers in the UK. Both run their own TV, online and other advertising campaigns so you probably know of them or have used them to sell a mobile phone to in the past or are thinking of using one of them to sell a mobile to.

Questions

The real questions are. Which one pays the most for mobile phones? Which one has the best and fastest service? How do they pay? Well even though we have reviewed these 2 mobile phone recyclers before let’s now compare their differences again.

Payment Methods

Envirofone have 3 different payment methods; Cheque, Paypal or Argos credit on a Reward card which gives you an additional 10% and you can donate a percentage to a Charity.
MazumaMobile have 2 different methods but also pay either in Cheque or Argos Vouchers and you get an additional 10% more on top of the cash value.

They both have the same Argos incentive but credit to Envirofone for offering Paypal as an alternative payment method which many people might probably find useful as well as the ability to pay off your Carbon offset where you can offset your mobile phone’s contributed carbon emissions by investing in projects that absorb or prevent the release of carbon dioxide equivalent to the carbon footprint of your mobile phone.

Website Effort

Both the Envirofone and MazumaMobile website are well designed as you’d expect from such large companies. They are both easy to use when wanting to sell your mobile phone and both have lots of information regarding their companies and the recycling industry. MazumaMobile provide a Mobile Phone Deletion Tool to safely erase your personal date before selling your mobile. Envirofone have more ways to interact with them through their “Green Room”. But you don’t wanna hang around. Just sell your mobile and your done. Still useful though.

Community Side

Obviously it’s good for any online company to have ways that its users can contact them. Normally a user forum shows a company has nothing to hide. Not that that’s an issue with 2 such well established mobile phone recyclers like these. Although both do make an effort to reach out to and work with the community in many ways. To be honest both have pretty much the same proven track record here. If you search the net and forums you’ll find posts by people who got their money paid promptly and the amount that was given and posts by people with different stories. But overall both are real genuine companies and try to provide a decent service to people. Because of how Envirofone have Paypal as a payment method it means many people normally get paid the next day they send their mobile in and that’s what matters next to the value given.
