Are Apple Users More Valuable for Businesses?

Evernote’s software allows you to not only capture and save but also access information from your mobile gadgets and/or your desktop.  As Phil Libin states, Apple people are definitely more valuable to business.

More New Users generated Per Developer by iOS compared to Other Platform

Libin made a presentation at the VentureBeat Mobile Summit recently where he shared his observations.  The CEO mentioned that iOS users constituted about 28% of Evernote’s total revenue and even led the way in terms of number of users achieved per developer.  At 24 per cent, was Windows desktop application generating revenue, while Mac stood at third position for generating 20 per cent.  Since people become more comfortable and even dependent on the application, the users become more valuable with time.

BlackBerry being Replaced by iPhone as Preferred Business Mobile

It is not only Libin who commented on the value of the iOSalign, but even reports have been stating how the business community is continually moving away from the BlackBerry and inching fast towards iPhone.  Articles and reports ever since 2009 have stated that iPhone is replacing BlackBerry and is now the more preferred business mobile.

Research in Motion (RIM), the Blackberry makers, are thinking of making their favourite BlackBerry Messenger available on other competitor handsets such as the iPhone.  If these plans materialize, it could serve a much-needed boost to RIM’s revenue and compensate to quite an extent its losing market share against Android and iOS.

Mobile Withdrawal following Phantom Limb Syndrome Behaviour

The Telegraph recently published an article which related the phantom limb syndrome to one’s addictive obsession with mobile phone and/or any other gadget. It was hard to miss!

This generation not only lives on mobile and gadget use, but even sleeps with them.  It relies heavily on mobile phones, which includes not just the phone, but also the calendar, organiser, email, notepad, storage, photo album, dictionary and many other applications.  For every possible thing, mobile comes of use becoming more like a body part or may I say, an extension of our bodies itself.

People suffering from phantom limb syndrome are basically those who have lost a limb and get a feeling of pain, tickling, aching or tingling where the limb does not exist anymore.  Earlier, doctors dismissed this syndrome terming it as more of an imagination or a feeling at the nerve endings.  Now, however it has been defined as the way the brain remaps and reorganises itself once any limb goes missing.  The part of the brain which controls the missing limb reworks accordingly, hence causing such phantom sensations.

A total of thousand students across 10 countries were studied in experiments which discussed how the inanimate objects become like a part of our bodies, which concluded that this study applied to mobiles.  If you do not believe me, listen to what a Mexico student said.  She had actually left her mobile in the car but had a feeling as if something was vibrating.  She thought it was her cell but didn’t find it when she searched for it.  Perfect example for Phantom Limb Syndrome!

Punishment for taking Girl’s Photo: Man’s Head Shaven

Talking about punishments, I wanted to share what I read recently on the website of the Times of India.  A man from inside the customer care centre of a telecom company was grabbed by a group of people as he was caught taking photos of a female employee at the care centre.  The people then dragged him outside onto the street and even shaved his head.

As the case suggests, Sabir Sheikh, the accused, found the girl to be attractive and took her photos.  The moment some customers took notice of this activity, they cornered him and the police was called.  The police official even stated that he was given a rough treatment apart from him getting paraded in public and having half his head shaven.  As if the embarrassment and punishment was not enough, a formal complaint too was registered against Sheikh.

With new mobile phones having such capabilities of taking photos as well as videos, the number of cases are increasingly becoming common wherein one’s privacy and personal rights are being violated.  This horrifying trend of happy snapping is not only risky since you never know what your photo may be misused for and by whom, it is definitely a strict violation if someone takes your photo or video without your permission.

This episode is not only a wake-up call but also is a warning for us in the UK since possessing a phone with a camera does not give one the right to take photos anytime and anywhere.

Fly Mobile Planning a Launch of 4 New Android Smartphones in India

I’m a little unsure about the popularity of Fly Mobile here in UK. It is a low-key mobile phone company from UK which mainly supplies low end mobile handsets to customers who mainly have connections from different mobile phone networks. They have a great presence in Indian market. As reported by UTV Techtree.com, the mobile company is contemplating launch of four Android handsets in India.

The handsets falling in the Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 10,000 price range will be available by third quarter of year 2011. Mr. Prem Kumar, CEO, Fly Mobile was recently heard stating that the company is empowering its app ecosystem and besides the handsets, is also planning to launch an India focused app store by the penultimate quarter this year.

With these new launches, Fly Mobile is striving hard to position itself strategically for a different market. They are now focusing on mobile phones having full multimedia capabilities, besides music play back and streaming video functionalities. The company’s expansion plans will get reflected in their shops and service centre network too, which they are planning to increase from 384 to 450.

What we cannot confirm as of now is whether they will remain focused on Indian market only where they are recognized as one of the major players, or will make their presence felt in UK too. You can buy their handsets like Fly v60 (a sim-free phone with multi-network compatibility) on Amazon for as less as 24.99 – a quite reasonable price for a low end phone.

Vodafone’s Video of “Evolution of the Mobile”

Check out the all new video of Vodafone online titled “Evolution of the Mobile” – just three minutes long but conveys a rather clever meaning.

The technique that has been used is called the 3D projection mapping and was created like an advertisement for the Android OS smartphones.  The ad shows Vodafone taking an old handset from the 1970s and morphing it through a range of models before it finally becomes the modern Android mobile phone.  Interesting to note is the fact that iPhone does not feature at all in this Android-focused video.  This looks quite like a flaw since iPhone has been considered quite a revolutionary handset and not having it anywhere in the series is little surprising.  However, after having known the video’s sole purpose, one can still understand the reasons behind iPhone’s disappearance.  After all, it is a promotional video for an Android, so why use any Apple products?

To figure out how 3D projection mapping functions is that, the object itself works as the screen instead of having a traditional and flat drop screen located behind the object.  The table that has been used to place the mobiles works as the screen and the images simulating the mobile buttons being pushed and the screens being used are the projections.  To be able to achieve this, the phones used are the dummy mobile phones painted white and all that is seen is the projection from above.

If you haven’t yet seen this video, make sure to type “Vodafone” along with “Evolution of the Mobile” else you will end up receiving lot of non-related content.

Is Mobile’s Patron Saint out too?

Did you hear about the 12 years long restoration work getting over at St. John’s Cathedral in‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands?  During this long period, many statues, adornments and structures were cleaned and restored while some were even replaced where the damage was extreme and severe.  What is also worth noting is a new addition to the cathedral.  An angel with a twist has been added – it portrays the modern day beauty while at the same time, holds a cell phone to her ears as if engaged in a conversation with God.

Tony Mooy, a sculptor from Amersfoort, created one of these 25 angels which is not only holding a mobile that has one button but is also wearing jeans.

Apart from this modern day angel, the sculptors have also added many other contemporary elements to the collection at the cathedral while the restoration process was going on.  One of them includes a stained glass window that illustrates the attack on the Twin Towers of New York.

The “Kanjermonument” or “whopper monument” as the St. John’s Cathedral is popularly known as, has a traditional gothic theme and each of its parts is covered with statues and marvellous decoration.  Some statues are nestled in areas which are not easily visible to the general public.

Tracing its origin to as early as 1220, it took more than 200 years for the construction of the cathedral to get completed which even included a big expansion project in the 1300s.

What remains to be seen is whether the newest angel at St. John’s is proclaimed as the Patron Saint of the mobile?

Application for Volunteer Work

Though everyone says they are always willing to volunteer (we trust you, but others might not), a new app released by Orange will make sure that if willing, people can indulge in charity work any time of the day. Aptly named, “Do Some Good,” the application facilitates participation in volunteer work even when users are involved in as mundane task as evacuating bowels, literally, all thanks to a partnership with some of the greatest charities in England.

The idea appears to have emanated from a survey conducted lately by Orange to figure out the times of the day when people feel most inclined to indulge in charitable work.  At the top, scoring 14 percent was the task “while boiling the kettle,” and “queuing in a shop” with 12 percent following closely. “Waiting for a bath to run” stood at 11 percent, closely followed by “waiting for a train” at 10 percent. A large number of people showed inclination towards charity “while commuting to work” too. The percentage of people wanting to volunteer while being “on the loo” wasn’t revealed. This new application however suggests that Orange took the survey results very seriously and a wide majority of people surveyed indeed showed interest in charitable work while evacuating bowels.

Well, we saw that question coming! – “So what do I volunteer for?”  Well, you can take part in Good Samaritan’s Wellbeing Survey or make use of your mobile to capture images of rundown areas in need of immediate attention for SCAN. The new application can be accessed at the Apple App Store.

It would be great to observe how many people actually go ahead and use the app.

LG claims Bigger is Better

If you are finding your current or old smartphone smaller now, there is some good news for you!  LG has come up with a new addition which is expected to hit Korea next month; and the European markets summer this year.

The new smartphone is named LG Optimus Big, and as the name goes, it really is gigantic.  A peep into the new phone’s photo shows that it is larger than the iPhone 3GS too.  So folks who love bigger things will surely love this one.  Well, when we actually got into some depth of analysis ‘how’ big it really is, we were slightly disappointed.  A comparison between LG Optimus Big with its competitors like Samsung Galaxy S II as well as HTC Desire HD reveals that while the screens of each of these are pretty similar, the only advantage LG has is that it uses Nova Screen, the much talked about technology.  Not only that, LG Optimus Big is believed to be twice as bright as the other phones that use the more conventional Super AMOLED Display.  It also uses up less power and claims to give deeper blacks and purer whites than most of the other LED screens.

Isn’t it contrary to our belief that the new technological advancements were moving towards sleeker and smaller gadgets in the 21st century rather than bulky and big?  Only time will tell as LG prepares itself for the launch of this new innovation.
