The race for the most popular OS amongst Americans is heating up. Android is on top now with 29% share in the US market while Apple and BlackBerry each hold on to a 27% share. However, it would be hard to predict the winners from this data alone as it varies based on whether you are following the OS or the manufacturer.
For example, if you look at the manufacturers, RIM and Apple are slightly ahead in the race and this doesn’t come as a surprise. Android is present on several handsets coming from different manufacturers while each of BlackBerry and iOS only appear on a specific manufacturer’s handset. The breakdown indicates that 1/3rd of the US population owns a BlackBerry and another 1/3rd owns an iPhone. The rest are left for Android. HTC seems to be the favourite amongst Android phones with 12% share while Motorola comes a close second with 10%. Samsung has 5% share in the Android market.
When it comes to the OS race, Microsoft is 4th, running on 7% of the HTC handsets that are purchased in the market. An interesting shift is the relative popularity of Android amongst the younger people, considering its earlier tag for being a geek OS to some extent. iPhone 5 is set to be released soon. There are some tablets too which will find their way into the market. In such a scenario it would be interesting to find out if Android continues to be on top. Quite a few experts believe that it will.
